What is Dropshipping?

f you've arrived at this page wanting to know about dropshipping, then I hope to answer all your questions. But more than this, I want to show you that this incredible way of doing business is now truly available to us in the UK. So, what is dropshipping?

Let us imagine you have a side-line business in which you sell crystal gifts. You market these via your own web site, and on internet auction sites such as eBay and QXL. You buy your stock of goods from your supplier, advertise and place auctions for what you have available and hopefully receive orders for your products. When you get an order, you bank the payment and pack and send out the item to your customer. You replenish your stock as and when you decide is necessary.

Enter a dropshipper i.e. a supplier who offers a dropshipping service. When you join with a supplier who will dropship, YOU hold no stock. The dropship company holds the stock. You market your products as normal e.g. on your web site and on Internet auctions. When you receive an order, you simply send the agreed trade price for the product sold to the dropshipper, together with details of your customer. The dropshipper packs and mails the item to your customer. When the customer opens the package, it appears as if it came direct from you i.e. there is nothing to tell the customer that the item came from the dropshipper.

How do you take advantage of dropshipping?

Dropshipping works in two ways:

First way

A company sets itself up to be a dropshipper. They research for products, produce catalogues and listings, and arrange the logistics of taking single orders and fulfilling them. The catalogue indicates the unit price you will pay per item - this price will normally include P&P for the dropshipper to ship the product to your customer.

To be able to sell a dropshipper's products, you need to become a member of their service. This usually involves a one-off membership fee, which gives you access to the dropshipper's product catalogue. You can choose to sell any items in the catalogue, and you know up-front the trade price and the P&P that you will be charged for the item.

You can sell these products in any way you wish and at any amount you think you can get. You can also charge a figure which you consider to be appropriate for P&P.

When you get an order from a customer, you first of all get the customer to pay you. This is quite normal on website sales and auction sales. You then send the customer's delivery details, plus the payment at trade price quoted in the catalogue, to the dropshipper. The dropshipper then packs and sends the ordered item to your customer.

Second way

An existing supplier opens a dropship channel. In this scenario, companies who are already supplying trade and retail outlets, provide a dropshipping facility so that they (you) can order items and request that they be delivered directly to your end customers.

There is usually no membership fees involved here, and the product range is that which the company is selling anyway.
