1. News and Views

a) Scamming the scammer

If you are a regular reader you will know how I bang on about

eBay security. How I advise you to change your passwords every 30

days. And never use the same password for eBay and PayPal.

Well, this week I came across a story concerning an attempted

scam.

It started out like any other eBay auction when Jeff put his

Powerbook for sale on eBay. He was contacted directly by someone

wanting to buy the item outside of eBay.

Over a period of weeks, Jeff managed to turn himself from victim

into scammer. Incidentally, this scammer was plying his trade

from London.

It's a beautiful story, and you can read all about it here:

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr601.htm

Bear in mind this really happened. Emotions ran high, and so did

the language. You've been warned!

b) No Charge Listing Day

As you may know, Thursday 17th June is a no charge listing day on

eBay. (I'm avoiding using the f word which means no charge, as

this could result in the newsletter being directed into your

garbage box by email filtering services.)

This is a great opportunity to ramp up the number of auctions you

run, without incurring listing charges.

For example, if you have multiple identical items to sell, you

could try listing some on 3, 5, 7 and 10 day auctions

concurrently. This gives you four opportunities to be in front of

searchers at the most visited point in auctions i.e. when they

are about to end.

c) eBay and shopping

According to Nielsen/NetRatings, eBay.com was the top

shopping/travel online destination based on unique visitors for

the week ending May 30, 2004.

eBay hosted 15.8 million unique visitors that week, more than

twice No. 2 Amazon.com, which hosted 6.5 million. Next came

Expedia.com at 3 million and Yahoo Shopping at 2.7 million.

eBay also held visitors on their site the longest, with an

average stay of 45 minutes and 32 seconds. Amazon was again in

the runners-up spot with 9 minutes 54 seconds.

A further piece of useful information is that the proportion of

male to female visitors to eBay was 55/45.

So what, Brian?

Well, it is figures such as these which confirms to me that eBay

is the place to be if you're wanting to earn additional income.

The eBay story continues to go from strength to strength. There

is no reason why any of us can't join the 430,000 people who make

a full-time living from home selling on eBay.

2. Something for Nothing

In researching for this newsletter I often drift across the ocean

to see what's happening in the eBay.com world.

I came across an excellent site from a group called

e-Powersellers. They operate as an eBay agent and are based in a

store. What's that I hear you say?

An eBay agent uses their expertise to sell goods on eBay on

behalf of another party. eBay calls this being a Trading

Assistant. The eBay seller is effectively providing a sales

service, in return for an agreed sales commission.

The difference with e-Powersellers is that they operate from a

store front - a shop to you and me. In fact, they have more than

one, and are in expansion.

People with items to sell can bring them in to a shop and

e-Powersellers take the necessary digital photos, and create and

manage an eBay auction for the item.

Does it work?

When I last checked they had just over 2,000 items currently on

auction. And their feedback was 4,700 plus!

Now, I'm not suggesting any of us should lease a shop and try and

emulate e-Powersellers. But - if you happen to own a shop, and

your an eBay seller, why not extend your current product range by

becoming an eBay "agent"?

It could be worth having a look at e-Powersellers site.

Another reason you might want to visit the site is to get access

to some really useful auction eBooks which they make available

without charge. Somewhat misleadingly you will find these eBooks

under the menu item "eBay Secrets". But I've made it easy for you

- if you click this link you will be taken straight to the

relevant page -

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr603.htm

I didn't look too closely at the none-auction eBooks they have on

the same page. But I suppose the eBook on hand-to-hand combat

might come in useful if you're planning to go to Portugal for the

final stages of Euro 2004!

3. What NOT to do

There are many places on the internet where you can find out

recommended ways to sell on eBay.

I thought it might be useful if I presented some thoughts about

what doesn't work, what won't succeed and what to avoid doing.

Don't time your auctions so they end on a Bank Holiday.

Don't use a negative tone in your listing.

Don't waste any of your 55 characters of auction title on words

or symbols like "L@@k", "Wow" or "Nice".

Don't worry about accepting international buyers.

Don't use music, animations, or multicoloured background in your

auction description.

Don't use the term "As is" in your listings.

Don't try to make a profit out of P&P.

Don't fail to identify defects in your item.

Don't delay in shipping your item.

Don't wait for the buyer to leave feedback first.

Don't rush to leave negative feedback for a non-paying bidder.

I'm sure there are plenty more where these came from. In fact, if

you'd care to let me have your list, I'll try and include them in

the next newsletter.

4. More Somethings for Nothing?

You may know I am the author of an eBook called 'The eBay

Formula', which is designed to help UK eBayers make a success in

selling on UK eBay.

Firstly, I would like to thank you if you have purchased 'The

eBay Formula'. I hope you are finding it to be helpful in your

eBay selling.

What I'd really like to do is remind you of one of the additional

items which you automatically acquired with 'The eBay Formula'

package.

That additional item is me! Or rather, my input to you.

If you have any questions or queries about using 'The eBay

Formula', or about anything to do with your eBay selling

business, please feel f (oops I nearly used THAT word!)to email

me.

If you'd like to know more about 'The eBay Formula' you can read

about it here. You will see that this page is specifically for

readers of this newsletter, and gives you the opportunity to

acquire 'The eBay Formula' at a reduced price.

5. Someone's auctioning what? Unusual items currently available

Nothing surprises me when it comes to internet auctions. Amuse

yourself with some of these beauties ...

Do you have a spare million, or perhaps two? If so you could be

in luck here

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr605.htm

I remember these. And the bruises that went with them!

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr606.htm

Talk about lock, stock and 2 smoking whatsits! The boys in blue

might be asking this seller a question or two.

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr607.htm

Oh! That's what he meant! I see... I've been watching too many

American movies!

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr608.htm

And you thought the Irish had all the luck? Three leaf clover

anybody?

http://www.workwinners.com/nlr609.htm

Disclaimer - I have no association with any of the sellers of the

above items.

6. Finally

If you are changing email addresses soon please put a note on

your calendar to send a blank email to:

newsletter@workwinners.com

after you get your new email address.

I don't want to lose touch with you!

If a friend sent you this newsletter, you need to send a blank

email to:

newsletter@workwinners.com

That way you can get your own copy next time!

Increasingly, email filters are preventing genuine email

communications such as this newsletter from reaching subscribers.

If you use any method of checking on your email, and you wish to

continue receiving the newsletter you may need to include my

email address in your safe list, whitelist or address book.

Thank you for continuing to take my newsletter - I hope it gives

you as much enjoyment to read, as it does me to write.

Regards
