1. Important Announcement

When I started this newsletter last year I had assumed it would

grow slowly to perhaps a few hundred subscribers.

However, I have been totally overwhelmed by the interest in it,

and the number of readers we now have is way beyond anything I

had anticipated.

It has reached the point where I have had to review how I spend

my own time, and the following changes apply immediately to the

newsletter:

a) From today, the newsletter will concentrate solely on eBay

auctions. I used to cover some aspects of QXL auctions, but I

have decided that I cannot do justice to both eBay and QXL. The

newsletter is now renamed the UK eBay Auction Newsletter

b) To reflect the growth in interest in eBay, the newsletter will

be issued every two weeks, rather than monthly as at present.

c) The newsletter may soon contain some limited third party

advertising, which is a way for me to earn some return for the

time I invest in the newsletter. Rest assured I will never allow

the level of such advertising to become annoying.

d) I have had to make some slight changes to the layout, to

prevent the newsletter from falling foul of some email protection

services. If you use any method of spam checking on your email,

and you wish to continue receiving the newsletter you may need to

include my email address in your safe list, whitelist or address

book.

I wish to thank you for staying with me, and I sincerely hope you

continue to find the contents of the newsletter to be both useful

and entertaining.

2. Why eBay?

If you have ever communicated with me directly, you will know of

my enthusiasm for eBay.

If your desire is to work from home, eBay really is the ultimate

new-start opportunity.

I know of no other business format where you can put something up

for sale to millions of people without having to invest in a

shop, advertising or a web site: and sell it and be paid within

days. I know you have to pay to list your item on eBay, but this

starts at 20p for up to ten days exposure to those millions of

prospective customers.

You can test a product within days, and there are virtually no

limits as to what you can sell on eBay. When selling on eBay you

can get involved in any area in which you have an interest or

expertise.

Back in July 2003, I wrote an item for the newsletter based on

The Sunday Times article that week where they had attended the

annual eBay Live conference in Orlando - along with 10,000

others.

The figures disclosed at that conference regarding the growth of

eBay from 2001 to 2002 were staggering:

eBay profits up from $90 million to $250 million

revenues up from $1.2 billion to $1.9 billion

eBay employee numbers up from 2,500 to 4,500

In the UK, membership grew 168% year on year

UK auction listings grew 109% year on year

On eBay, a used car is sold every 30 seconds, a computer game

every 8 seconds, a digital camera every minute. The company

estimated 150,000 people now make a full-time living selling on

eBay.

Today, there are 86 million registered eBay members worldwide.

The last published figure showed that 5.6 million of those were

in the UK.

The company's current market value is $40 billion - or $11

billion more than Ford Motor Company!

eBay is that most unusual of creatures - a dot com business that

is making a profit, and thriving!

At home, eBay.co.uk is now the most visited ecommerce internet

site in the UK. Here is the Hitwise top ten for September 2003

1 ebay.co.uk

2 amazon.co.uk

3 tesco.com

4 ebay.com

5 shopping.yahoo.com

6 amazon.com

7 nectar.com

8 eshop.msn.com

9 virgin.co.uk

10 apple.com

So, the eBay name is already well known, is constantly promoted

and re-promoted by every new member and in every auction listing.

The great news is that eBay's eyes are firmly fixed on

international expansion - which is good for us in Europe where

eBay UK is second only in size to eBay Germany.

If you're in the market to make extra money, and you want to do

it through online auctions, then I can assure you with eBay you

have definitely selected the right partner.

3. Use eBay's own training services

If you're new to eBay, there are thousands of people who offer

information on how to succeed on eBay. One of the best sources to

learn about basic tasks is eBay itself.

eBay have some excellent online tutorials which have sound and

vision.

It shows how to undertake fundamental tasks on eBay, such as -

How to buy

Selling your first item

How to browse and search for an item

etc

You will find  all the details at the following page:

4. The Price is Right

A subscriber to the newsletter recently asked my opinion of an

auction support service they had come across.

It is called AuctionKeywords. In essence, this is a service which

supplies its subscribers with a regular list of the words which

buyers and bidders key into eBay search boxes. If you are

familiar with how eBay searching works, you will see immediately

how valuable this intelligence is.

If you're not sure why this information has such value, I'll try

and quickly explain it.

Most eBay buyers and bidders search for items they are interested

in by inputting one or more words into eBay's search box. eBay

takes these words, examines its database of auctions, and returns

those where the keyed-in words are contained in the auction

title.

So, if you KNEW which words were most popular with bidders and

buyers, you could make sure your auction titles contained those

words so that your auctions were returned more often from eBay

searches.

I hope that conveys it sufficiently well.

What I can tell my enquirer is that having knowledge of these

Keywords is a bit like knowing the result of the race before it

takes place. And, AuctionKeywords in my opinion is supplying a

highly valuable service.

However, what made my reader's request really interesting is that

AuctionKeyword's web site contains the following statement

"Auction Keyword's technology is so new, that as of the building

of this web site there is not another site like it!"

Well, I don't know when their web site was built, but there is

another service which provides similar information!

I should know - because it is mine!

As you may know I offer a service called the Keyword Selling

Service.

The Keyword Selling Service supplies its subscribers with a

regular list of the words which buyers and bidders key into eBay

search boxes. Sound familiar?

What I find really interesting is that my "competitors" charge up

to $47 per month for their service.

An annual subscription to my Keyword Selling Service works out at

less than £5 per month!

Maybe I am undercharging?

Anyway, if you want to learn more about the significance of

Keywords, you can read all about it here:

5. Are you new to PCs?

From time to time I receive emails from people regarding some

problem or other they are having with their PC.

Although I'm not an expert, I try and help where I can.

What this brings to mind is that I'm as guilty as anyone of

assuming that people all have a similar level of PC knowledge. We

perhaps forget that we all have to start somewhwere with PCs.

If you're relatively new to working with PCs there is an

excellent club which I'm sure you'll find useful. It's called The

Newbie Club, and you can see what it has to offer here:

6. Someone's auctioning what?

Unusual items currently available

Nothing surprises me when it comes to internet auctions. Amuse

yourself with some of these beauties ...

Just type the auction number into the Search Box on eBay.

Feeling peckish? Well, if you have a spare 50p, and you can hold

your hunger until the auction ends, you can be the proud owner of

a brand new Mars Bar. Take a look at auction 2979743986. I don't

want to appear to be a fuddy duddy, but some people really do

need to get a life!

OK, I'll be the first to admit I'm a wee bit sceptical about

Russell Grant and the others when it comes to foretelling the

future. But being able to tell me what's going to happen to

Archie, my King Charles Spaniel, well that WOULD be clever. It

seems it can be done, on auction 2979674271

I saw this, and completely misunderstood what the seller was

offering. I thought the great man had gone soft. Why would he

need curtains? To hide his modesty while showering in the desert?

To wrap round his rifle and protect it from snow or mud? What do

you think of when you see this auction title - 2373048681

Help! Can anyone explain to me why anyone would submit an auction

like this to eBay. It is so BAD it just HAS to be deliberate.

It's not just the spelling errors, but they'll do for now!

Perhaps it's Ali G in disguise? What do you think? 2979512837

Got a spare couple of million? Do you like motor racing? Then you

might be interested in getting involved with a team who want to

win Le Mans 24 Hours Race in 2005! By the way, don't bid on this

auction - even in fun - as the seller states that the successful

bidder will be responsible for eBay's Final Value Fee of around

£35,000! The auction is 2779745132

Disclaimer - I have no association with any of the sellers of the

above items.
