After You've Won, How do you Check if the Seller is Real?
by Brian McGregor

In the article we consider what to do after you've won an item, but before you part with your money.

If you have any hesitancy about the veracity of the seller, you should get in touch with the seller or check them out by some means other than email.

Depending on what information you are provided with in emails from the seller, here are some of the steps you might consider:

a) Ring them - preferably on a landline

b) Check the address they've given is a valid one through Royal Mail's web site http://www.royalmail.com. If they haven't given you an address, request one as "you may be sending them a cheque" - and then you can check it out.

c) Check the telephone number against name and address through directory enquiries, dial 192, or at http://www.bt.com.

d) When you decide it's safe to pay, consider using a credit card which offers you some level of protection against fraud for this type of transaction.

e) If your seller asks you to pay via Western Union, or via an escrow service which isn’t http://www.escrow.com, be extremely wary. Indeed, if the seller insists on one of these two methods, I would advise you not to go ahead with your purchase.

eBay offers a Fraud Protection Programme which a buyer can invoke if they have a concern about an individual transaction they are involved in.

Be extra vigilant when buying from sellers who are outside of your country.

In my experience, the vast majority of members you will "meet" buying and selling on eBay are genuine people who are not trying to mislead or "rip-off" others. However, the sensible precautions covered in this article should help to make your transactions even safer.
